The namesake of the collection, Burning Night was phrased by Ōtepoti-based artists Esta de Jong and Lance Strickland within a collage work that features as a screen print in the new JPalm collection. Their photography-led art practice embraces high contrast darkroom methodologies, composed fashion portraiture with a raw and tactile analogue energy.
The screenprint features a quote from Esta De Jong's artwork - 'Burning Night, Dim Darkness, Sin and Want,' paired with Julia Palm’s quip, 'Bite Your Tongue'— a reflection on the daily challenges of navigating societal expectations. Lance Strickland's discarded film photograph, reworked by Esta De Jong, found its way to the workroom wall at JPalm and became the centerpiece of this design. It’s accompanied by iconic photographs from Esta De Jong and distinctive JPalm accents, adding layers of meaning and nuance.
